Writers can choose to stay for the whole event or to drop by and write for however long they would like. All writers and all types of writing across every stage of the writing process are welcome at our writing in community programs. Writers are encouraged to attend every week, but weekly participation is not a requirement. It’s a time for writers of all disciplines to come together to talk through their writing, receive support, and make progress on their projects. These are scheduled, recurring times for students to work on their writing projects in a supportive community of fellow writers. Use bulleted lists in place of long series or text lists. Several short paragraphs are preferable to a single long paragraph. Long, dense blocks of text are intimidating to readers. Break up different ideas into different paragraphs Use headingsīreak up your text with brief but descriptive headings and subheadings so users can find information faster. Avoid using proprietary terms and abbreviations as much as is possible. Use terms that are commonly used to describe your topic. Include additional information in order of diminishing importance. Put the essential and most interesting information at the beginning. Use the “Inverted Pyramid” style of writing Neutral language is easier to read and understand than subjective and boastful text. Long sentences with complex structures that endeavor to explain in complicated terms a topic that could otherwise be described in a more straightforward manner are best avoided.
